Africa’s Potash and Phosphate Industry Update: Emmerson and Kropz

EMMERSON Plc, the Moroccan focused potash development company, has published its 2020 sustainability summary with a forward-looking view on the development and construction of its Khemisset potash project in Morocco. The company has been analysing the potential impacts on people, local communities, and the environment in the different project development workstreams. The highest standards were adopted to reflect on the company’s vision and values, which all can be summarised by the phrase: ‘Doing the right things in the right way’. “The Khemisset project will not only contribute to the overarching agenda of enriching agricultural soils to provide affordable food for the world’s growing population, but will have a positive impact on the local area because the directors are determined to do it in the right way,“ Emmerson CEO, Graham Clarke, commented. „We will endeavour to maximise material benefits for all of its stakeholders while mitigating the impact of mining on the environment, both in the construction and production phases. We are proud that the project will be such a positive catalyst for economic development in Morocco, which is why we have strong support from the Government and the local communities around Khemisset.“
KROPZ Plc, an emerging African phosphate explorer and developer, has announced an update for its Hinda phosphate project located in the Republic of the Congo (RoC). Kropz has appointed Hatch Africa Pty Ltd, a global engineering and construction firm, to complete the updated feasibility study on Hinda that will target a phased approach in line with the terms of the mining investment agreement, with initial production of 1 million tpy of phosphate rock being exported from the existing port facility at Pointe-Noire. A second phase production ramp-up of 2 million tpy will also be evaluated with export from a new port site, located north of Pointe-Noire. While RoC is experiencing its second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, this is not currently impacting on the work schedule being undertaken by Hatch. The updated feasibility study will be concluded by in late September 2021. The company will announce the results as soon as they become available.
KROPZ Plc has also announced an update for its Elandsfontein phosphate project (Elandsfontein) located in South Africa. Significant progress continues to be made at Elandsfontein and the project remains on track for achieving the target date for production in Q421, within the project capital budget. These achievements have been realised against the backdrop of the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. South Africa is currently facing a damaging second wave of COVID-19. The present focus is primarily on the site-based construction activities, which are permitted to continue under the current level three restrictions. Earthworks are largely complete, and civil construction is advancing. Fabrication of structural steel, platework and piping has commenced, and the first major mechanical equipment has been delivered to the site. The company’s priority remains the health and well-being of its staff and contractors. Kropz Elandsfontein Pty (Ltd) has adopted appropriate measures, in accordance with local and international guidelines, to protect them from COVID-19. The pandemic could, however, still adversely affect the schedule for Elandsfontein. The company will provide further updates on project progress in early Q221.
